5 Reasons Why You Should Change Your Daily Caffeine Ritual

Most people crank caffeine in the morning  - usually a big cup of coffee - in order to ‘jumpstart’ their system for the impending workday. You know what happens next: a few hours of solid work pass by, then after lunch those same people are crashing. We get stuck in this cycle but we don’t like changing things up because we are afraid our cycle of productivity will be affected. Here are 5 reasons why you should change your daily caffeine ritual.

1. Exit the caffeine rollercoaster

By ingesting large amounts of caffeine, only to crash and need to find a way back up, you are riding a caffeine rollercoaster. Feeling wired one minute, and tired the next is not a healthy way to go through your day. Once you are on the rollercoaster, it is hard to get off. Oh, and this regime comes with a bunch of nasty little side effects, which we have all experienced, such as mood swings and difficulties sleeping. Let’s also not forget the hidden amounts of dairy and sugar that come from multiple cups of coffee every day, which can creep up on your waistline. Lastly, repeatedly hitting your favorite coffee shop or cafe to get your fix can be damaging to the wallet.

2. Calm those caffeine jitters - they are real, and they really suck

Do any of these sound familiar: Trembling hands, difficulties typing, trouble concentrating? This body state is affectionately known as ‘the jitters.’ The jitters are caused by the body’s release of adrenaline, a response to caffeine that happens when we drink a lot of of it, known as over-caffeinating. You can also get edgy and snappy with people, especially if you are overdosing on caffeine late in the day. Yes, you can overdose on caffeine, and it probably happens more than you realize! Unfortunately you have to ride out being in this tweaked-out state, as it takes the body several hours or some heavy exercise to metabolise caffeine in the bloodstream.

3. Stop getting crushed by the 2pm slump

It’s 2pm. You’ve cleared your inbox, delivered a slick presentation to your team, and have made progress on that big report. Things are looking up, a smooth cruise into the final part of the work day...when all of a sudden...it hits: the 2pm slump. Motivation, energy, and drive all take a plunge. All of a sudden you are posting ‘tired’ selfies and watching cat videos on Reddit. Being ‘slumped’ will not only affect your productivity, but you run the risk of trying to over-caffeinate to compensate (which we should have just convinced you is bad news).

4. Try tea - it is basically magic

There is a light at the end of the tunnel! No - not that crusty old coffee pot in the common area, nor that bejazzled 20oz can filled with chemicals. The solution is tea. Tea is nature’s energy drink, with a cup of green tea containing anywhere from 20-50 mg of caffeine (about ¼ to ½ of a cup of coffee). Just enough caffeine to give you a light buzz. But here is the real kicker: tea won’t let you crash, because it contains a magic-like compound called L-theanine. This compound slows the absorption of caffeine and produces a gentler, consistent, and more sustainable wave of energy. Think about it - have you ever crashed after a cup or two of tea? We think not.

5. Micro-dose your energy to improve focus and cognitive performance

Clearly, a gentle and more sustainable approach to caffeine consumption is needed - one that can stabilize your energy levels while avoiding a jittery, slump-in-your-seat crash of epic proportions. The daily energy problem was affecting us too, so we turned to science. Studies show that low-dose, “micro-dosed” caffeine in amounts of 30-50 mg can enhance focus and cognitive performance. “Micro-dosing” caffeine from tea can get you back on track during your workday while keeping you sharp, focused, and balanced. Who’s ready?
